Your nose and mouth provide two ways to breathe. Both lead to your throat, which carries oxygen into your lungs. Even so, there are important differences between nose breathing and mouth breathing.

Your nose is designed to help you breathe safely, efficiently, and properly.

What improper oral resting structure may look like, to name a few:
👄 Lips are not sealed together at rest.
😮 Mouth is open, even when not speaking or eating.
😮‍💨 Breathing through the mouth instead of the nose.
👅 Tongue may protrude or rest low in the mouth.
💭 Lower jaw may hang forward.

Open mouth posture refers to a condition where the mouth and lips are not in a proper resting position, often characterized by the mouth being open at rest, and breathing through the mouth instead of the nose.

Between 9 and 12 months, babies begin to imitate sounds, understand simple instructions with verbal and visual cues, and use body language to communicate, often saying their first meaningful words like “mama” and “dada”.

Between 6-9 months, a baby’s early communication skills typically include: babbling with varied sounds, responding to facial expressions, using gestures like pointing, turning towards familiar voices, recognizing their name, and potentially starting to imitate sounds you make; they may also begin to understand simple words like “no” and associate certain sounds with specific actions, like waving “bye-bye” when you say it.
Here’s what a caregiver can do to boost some of these skills!

Between 3-6 months, babies begin to develop early communication skills like cooing, gurgling, babbling, laughing, making different sounds to express emotions (happy or upset), recognizing familiar voices, turning their head towards sounds, imitating sounds, and blowing raspberries; essentially, they start experimenting with vocalizations to interact with their environment and caregivers.
Here’s what a caregiver can do to increase these developing skills!

In the 0-3 month range, a baby’s early communication skills primarily involve responding to sounds and voices, expressing needs through different cries, smiling, making eye contact, and using facial expressions to convey emotions, including cooing and gurgling sounds to communicate basic needs and feelings.
Here’s what a caregiver can do to encourage those skills!

The Language Development Pyramid is a visual representation of the general order in which children acquire non-verbal and verbal communication skills.
Typically, the pyramid is represented by a foundation block of prelinguistic skills and attention on top of which lay successive blocks all the way up to speech sounds!

Toy rotation is important and recommended for kids because it helps maintain their interest, encourages deeper engagement, and supports cognitive and motor development. Here are a few key benefits:
🧸Reduces Overstimulation – Too many toys at once can overwhelm children, making it harder for them to focus and fully engage in play. Rotating toys keeps their play space organized and manageable.

🦴Enhances Creativity and Problem-Solving – When children have fewer toys available, they tend to use them in more creative ways, encouraging imaginative play and problem-solving skills.

🚂Promotes Sustained Attention – Constant exposure to the same toys can lead to boredom. Rotating toys reintroduces novelty, sparking renewed interest and prolonged play sessions.

🪁Supports Developmental Growth – Different toys target different developmental skills (e.g., fine motor, gross motor, language, social-emotional skills). By rotating toys, you ensure kids have varied opportunities to develop across multiple areas.

🪀Encourages Gratitude and Value for Toys – When children don’t have access to all their toys at once, they tend to appreciate and engage more deeply with the ones they do have.

🪆Simplifies Cleanup and Organization – Fewer toys available at one time means less clutter, making it easier for kids to clean up and for parents to maintain an organized space.

🚘Extends the Lifespan of Toys – Regular rotation prevents toys from being overused too quickly and keeps them in better condition for a longer period.

Toy rotation doesn’t have to be complicated—it can be as simple as storing some toys out of sight and switching them out every few weeks. This strategy fosters an enriching play environment while also making toy management easier for parents.

The best thing to do is to speak to your pediatrician about your child’s individual needs!

Children learn pronouns as part of their overall speech and language development. As children learn to speak, pronoun errors are part of the learning process. Most of the time, these errors are age-appropriate.

When children have around 50 words in their lexicon, they begin to combine two words! Two words can include things like “more milk”, “mommy sit”, and “in box”.

Ever wondered what counts as a word?
These include things like animal sounds, word approximations, sign language and sound effects.

Communication goes further than just saying “real words”…
It can include things like AAC, word approximations, gestures, hand pushing and facial expressions!
